Fiachra Rowan 

MD FRCS(Orth) FFSEM


FiachraRowan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospital Waterford, Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital and UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Ireland. He is a specialist in hip and knee surgery. His interest lies in hip and knee pathologies from adolescence through to old age.


About Mr. Rowan

Mr. Rowan graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2004 with honours. His basic surgical training and higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery was competed at various hospitals around Ireland. He worked at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York where he was awarded the clinical excellence award for his performance. Mr. Rowan then moved to London to train in Sports Surgery at University College London Hospital and Princess Grace Hospital. He holds a Doctorate of Medicine from University College Dublin, is a Fellow of Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery and a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine at the RCSI. He reviews for various journals and submissions for international meetings. He has published book chapters, peer-reviewed articles and has presented worldwide. He is founding secretary of the Irish Knee Society, is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at RCSI and is the Honorary Academic Secretary of the Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.

Hip and Knee complaints

Common hip problems that Mr. Rowan can assess and offer treatment for include young adult hip pain, hip arthritis and problematic hip replacements. Mr. Rowan is trained in hip replacements and revision hip replacements. A large part of his trauma surgery work involves hip fractures and fractures around hip replacements.

The knee conditions that Mr. Rowan sees range from sporting injuries to joint degeneration. Patellar dislocation and anterior knee pain are common symptoms in younger patients. Anterior cruciate ligament ruptures, meniscal tears and chondral lesions are common problems in both sporting and non-sporting people. Mr. Rowan’s trauma practice includes knee  dislocations that requires multiple ligament repair and reconstruction. Mr. Rowan is also experienced in osteotomies around the knee, partial knee replacements, total knee replacements and revision knee replacements.
